BOTTLING & CANNING HISTORY

Bottling and canning are ingrained in the American Experience. The inhabitants of the Americas drank plant-based beverages in sacred ceremonies since time immemorial. The Mayans of the Yucatán partook of cocoa brews from decorative vessels on pyramid tops. The Mississippian Civilization and the nations of the Southeastern Woodlands prepared “The Black Drink” from yaupon leaves and other native ingredients, sipped from incised ceramic beakers. Algonquin-language speakers of the Eastern Woodlands drank from dried gourds, clay vessels, and soapstone bowls.

Throughout the colonial era, European settlers brought with them the tradecraft of glassmaking — itself a practice developed by the Ancient Egyptians, Mesopotamians, and Phonecians. Bottles of rum are preserved in Caribbean seafloor sands as well as the songlore of pirates.

At the mouth of Dock Creek sat a tavern of lumber and brick: hewn and laid in England and transported and assembled hereabouts. It was here to greet William Penn and his entourage of Quakers aboard The Welcome. The Blue Anchor Tavern was its name and Captain William Dare was its keeper. It was a den of strong drink, mischief, and violence. The City of Brotherly Love was forged with a wink. Glassworks spangled the Delaware River as time flowed with it.

Bottlemakers fashioned flasks and casks in various colors and shapes, from cobalt blue to pecan. In them were stored wines, ale, beer, fancy colognes, durable inks, mustards, cayennes, and bear oils
